What service is offered by the Practice nurse in chemotherapy?

The Practice nurse in chemotherapy will be meeting you and your family at the initial stages of chemotherapy treatment. She will continue to act as a point of contact throughout your chemotherapy treatment.

You will be offered:

  • Information about the treatment
  • Information about the management of side-effects
  • Follow-up during your chemotherapy treatment
  • Emotional support
  • Direct contact line to chemotherapy support line
  • A link to other members of the multidisciplinary team within the Oncology
    • Centre including:
      – Aurora Support Service
      – RT Focal Nurse
      – Clinical Support Services (physiotherapists, psychologist, occupational therapists, social workers)
      – Other professionals
      – Collaboration with other NGOs and Community Services such as:
      • Primary Healthcare services
      • Commcare
      • Hospice Malta
      • The National Cancer Platform

Who can make use of the service?

All oncology patients receiving chemotherapy can make use of this service, especially those patients who have never received chemotherapy before.

How can you be referred to the Practice nurse in chemotherapy?

You can be referred by the consultant, nurse navigator or other health care professionals. The Practice nurse in chemotherapy will contact you to organise an appointment before you start your treatment. You can also feel free to contact the Practice Nurse upon your own request.

The chemotherapy practice nurse also leads Aurora Support Service.
