What does the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics do?

Dietitians can support you to eat and drink well if you have a diagnosis of cancer. Good nutrition can help you remain healthy and strong during cancer treatment, improves your quality of life, and combats treatment side effects and illness. Dietitians can assess what nutrition advice you need at each stage of your care. This may include making the most of what you are eating, supporting you with your weight and strength, or using special nutrition if required.

What services are offered by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics?

We offer an inpatient and outpatient dietary consultation service for adult and paediatric cancer patients.

Additionally, educational group talks are held for:

  1. Cancer survivors, for advice on nutrition for recovery after cancer and to improve well-being,
  2. Cancer patients in palliative care, for advice on eating well to maintain their strength and quality of life.

Who can make use of this service?

Any cancer patient requiring nutritional advice due to cancer and its treatment can be referred to dietitians. You may benefit from a dietary consultation if you experience any of the following problems:

  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Malnourishment and not managing to get enough calories when it’s hard to eat
  • Low appetite, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and other treatment side-effects
  • Requiring nutritional supplements
  • Requiring liquid food through a tube
  • Unsure what to eat after a cancer diagnoses and during cancer treatment
  • Being immunosuppressed and requiring advice to avoid foodborne illness
  • Nutritional concerns at end-of-life

How can you be referred?

Kindly ask your doctor or nurse navigator for a referral note should you require an outpatient dietitian appointment. After you present the referral note at the reception desk within the clinical support services, you will receive an appointment letter by post that indicates the date and time of your dietitian appointment.
