Where is the Radiotherapy department at the Oncology Center?
The Department of Radiotherapy is located at Level -1 of the oncology centre.
Planning your radiotherapy treatment
Once you have been referred for radiotherapy treatment, your treatment will usually begin within a few weeks. During this time, you will be scheduled for a CT scan. This scan is different from diagnostic scans, as it is used specifically for treatment planning. Following your CT scan, your consultant, medical physicists and radiographers will develop an individualised radiotherapy plan for you.
Preparation for treatment
Upon arrival at the Radiotherapy Department, inform the receptionist so you can be registered and given your next appointment. Please wait in the reception area until you are called by the radiographer. No special preparation is required unless you have been given specific instructions by the radiographer. Some patients may be asked to drink water before treatment, while others may need to change into a gown.
Your First Treatment Session
A radiographer will explain the full procedure, including the treatment process, remind you of possible side effects and answer any questions you may have. You will then be taken to the treatment room and positioned in the same way as during your CT scan. The radiographers will leave the room but will monitor you at all times via an audiovisual system.
It is important to remain still throughout the treatment session. Before treatment begins, X-Ray imaging may be taken to ensure accurate positioning. Once this is confirmed, the treatment will start. You will see the machine moving around you. It will approach you but will not touch you. You will not feel or see the treatment, although you may hear some noise from the machine..
Once the treatment is given, you can get dressed and the radiographer will confirm your next appointment.
Radiotherapy treatment
Radiotherapy is delivered as a series of short daily sessions. Each session typically lasts 20 minutes. Treatment is usually given Monday to Friday with a rest period over the weekend and continues for a duration of 3-7 weeks depending on your individual treatment plan. Appointment times may vary during the week.
After your treatment
After your final session, you will be given an appointment with your oncologist, who will discuss your treatment and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. You may also be reviewed by a nurse to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
Your Care Team
During your treatment, you will be supported by a multidisciplinary team, including radiographers, your oncologist and a focal nurse. If you encounter any difficulties and/or experience side effects related to radiotherapy, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
Visitors
A relative or friend may accompany you for your radiotherapy sessions, however, they are not permitted to enter the treatment room. We kindly ask that the number of accompanying persons is kept to a minimum.
